If you’ve ever opened the fridge so wilted veggies, old salami or leftovers that have been there so long you can’t remember when they were made – you’re not alone. Australian households throw out around 2.5 million tonnes of food each year, according to government analysis, which also costs households $2500 annually. There are plenty of strategies and recipes that can help reduce food waste, but it’s also something newer “smart” fridges can help with.
With high-tech features ranging from internet connectivity and built-in cameras, to AI integrations, virtual post-it notes, shopping lists and recipe suggestions based on the ingredients that are on your shelves, one of these refrigerators could be a game-changer in your kitchen. As well as helping you make the most of your groceries to reduce food waste, a smart fridge could help you save time figuring out what’s for dinner, check what you need when you’re at the shops and potentially even save you money on energy bills through efficient features, designs and controls.
So to help you find a fridge that can make things that bit easier in the kitchen, here we have rounded up some of the best smart fridges in Australia based on features including connectivity, apps, design and even customer reviews.

What are the most useful smart fridge features?
The helpful features of these high-tech fridges tend to be those that focus on temperature management, connectivity or a combination of the two.
For example, a chiller compartment, multi-zone compartment or even a ‘quick freeze’ zone can all help make it easy to use everything in your fridge – and reduce food waste as a result. Fridges with a multi-zone option – where you can swap between freezing, chilling or thawing – can also be very convenient. Just imagine being able to freeze leftovers with the push of a button when you know you won’t eat them for a few days.
In terms of useful internet or connectivity features, some of the key ones are:
- Shopping lists and/or details of what’s in your fridge
- Recipe suggestions based on fridge contents
- Virtual notes or messages on the fridge display
- Remote temperature control and monitoring via an app
- Access to cooking videos, YouTube and recipe platforms
- TV-mirroring for compatible appliances
Depending on your household, you might not need all (or any) of these features. But anyone who’s ever wondered if it’s still safe to eat that cooked rice or what to make with prawns that need to be used could find answers more quickly with some of these features. The same goes for other smart features designed for specific situations or needs, such as lockable compartments for those that need to chill medicine.

Is a smart fridge worth it?
The short answer is “it depends”. If you need a new fridge, investing in a smart one could help increase its efficiency, help you reduce food waste and save time coming up with all the dinner ideas. But if your current fridge is perfectly fine, it might be worth waiting.
Consumer advocacy organisation CHOICE stated last year that smart fridges haven’t reached peak functionality just yet. This is due to all the ‘fun stuff’, that borders the line between gimmicky and actually helpful, like Samsung’s ‘Refridgerdating’ app that uses your fridge to create a dating profile.
It can also seem a bit gimmicky – just about every household appliance now has a smart version – from smart TVs and smart beds to barbecues and ovens. But there are plenty of useful features that can expertly assist day-to-day family life. Staying organised and prepared is at the top of the priority list for a smart fridge, and many brands follow through on their promise to keep family dinners as easy as possible every night.
